Search Engines

Search engines are tools like Google and Yahoo. Each uses computer programs that go out on the Web and locate hyperlinks that are available to the public. The programs load the links into a database which is indexed so you can search using keywords.

Search Directories

Subject directories sometimes look like Web search engines on the surface, but there are differences. Web search engines try to index as much of the Web as possible, and they do so using computer programs that don't differentiate as far as the quality of a site is concerned. Subject directories, on the other hand, usually index a much smaller portion of the Web because they try to collect quality resources on specific subjects (hence the name).
